Jim's - Final Review

I like Cate's idea of having a final review post for each of us. This allows us to have some last minute reviews and suggestion readily available.

I'm pretty much finished. Please review and let me know your thoughts. I decided to make a single page to help the students to follow the steps, like a recipe, and have everything all there in one place. This also helps keep them  on track and not get lost. I've seen many Webquests use this format.

The group page has been updated and is fully functional now. Please let me know if you need any further updates. I'll check regularly until the date date/time.

Wow. Your Webquest is extremely comprehensive!

I think the design is amazing!

You might want to think about putting the graphic organizer and the rubric in a separate file/page because I kept wanting to look at them at the same time I was looking at other parts of the site.

Did you mean to put "Website design specifics " on the graphic organizer? I'm assuming you did and I just didn't read far enough in the link to find out why.

1.Purpose:
Has an identifiable educational purpose (i.e. activity type or structure) ? Fits under Problem Solving/information searches

Is the activity clearly linked to required school curricular expectations (rather than being an end in itself, completely separate from other curriculum activities)? very clearly part of the photography class

Use of the Internet:
Will using the Internet enhance the activity (as opposed to being an activity that could be done well without the Internet)?
The largest advantage of this webquest is that the students can proceed at their own pace and do not have to keep track of reams of paper to complete the project.

Is the activity a "powerful" one; that is, does it have at least some of the attributes described by Harris in the article about Wetware at http://virtual-architecture.wm.edu/Foundation/wetware.html? This is a powerful activity. In this activity, students find information, synthesize it, apply it and share it. This structure could be applied to many different subjects. And the activity is much simpler when presented on the internet.

Objective:
Does the objective of the activity involve students using (comparing, contrasting, analyzing, synthesizing) Internet resources and/or information (rather than merely involve them finding resources and information)? Yes - analyzing the photos.

Is the objective stated in terms of student learning outcomes? Yes

Activity Design:
Are students who use the activity likely to have the necessary experience and background to do the required activities (or is it at too high a level for them)? This lesson is for 7/8th who are choosing to take this class. I believe they would have the interest and background to handle this webquest. A student without specific interest in photography might have a little trouble.

Are the directions for the activity stated clearly enough for everyone to understand and follow?
Is there enough time allowed for completion of the activity (especially if it involves small group work)?

Yes

Is technical and other support made available to the students so that they are able to complete the activity? The students shouldn't need extra support for this activity.

Also "Students will work collaboratively to decide..." not "decided." Wish I could type. Or see.

Also, please remove "and other purposes" from the Telepurpose.

Thanks.

Evaluation framwork still has a, b, an c on it.

Did you want to fill that in?

Jim said...

Cate,
I took your advice and put the graphic organizer and rubric on separate pages that open in new windows (set "target to _blank in DW).

Dawn,
The a,b,c... are just placeholder examples for the student to use to fill in thier findings. I'm not putting info in here.

Jim,
I love our group page. However, I need to change my objectives on my summary. If I get it to you this afternoon will you still have to the time to change it?

Thanks,
Beth

You took my advice. I feel so wise :)

Last thing, usually "Extension" means an extension of the current project. You probably want to either rename the last bit ("extra time?","closing activity?' They don't sound right..) or change it to have something to do with photography. Have the students start their own opinion blog, post to an edmodo site, set up and take a picture with the improvements they suggested.

Hey Jim,

Could you change my grade level to 5th grade please?

Thanks!!!!

Alyssa

Cate,

At my school "Extensions" are any activities at the end of a lesson that has educational value, whether or not it is directly related to the lesson or not. Freerice. com is a vocabulary building website that many teachers use as an extension if student finish early.

Jim, please change my objectives to read:
Students will research and evaluate the life William Shakespeare in order to analyze the controversy of his life and his writings. Students will identify and examine the authors suspected to be the true William Shakespeare, and will argue over the true identify of William Shakespeare.

Jim,
Dreamweaver question: How do you create a textbox around a paragraph?
Thanks,
Beth

Jim said...

Beth,
You can create a box around text 2 ways I know. You can put the text into a Table and put borders on the Table. Or, you can give a paragraph a Class, then style the Class on the CSS page to have a border (box properties). Hope that helps.
