Krage Lesson ideas

If we chose this method, everyone should be their own post, not a comment on someone else's.

Title of Proposed Lesson: Clean out the Computer Lab....
Objective: Technology for Problem-Solving and Decision-Making - Students will be able to understand problem, devise a plan, carry out plan and communicate conclusion
Teleresearch Purpose: Mostly #5- to help students solve an authentic problem, but the other purposes as well
Grade Level: 7
Content Area: Technology, Science (and a little Language Arts)
Summary: The 7th graders will research local methods of disposing of/recycling the everyday flotsam and jetsam of technology. They will then develop ways to effectively implement these methods at the school and disseminate the information to the community.
Value: (i.e. why it's "worth it": Technology is changing so quickly and every time there is an upgrade, tons of trash is created. The students will see that their research and learning can have a real world effect. And my lab will get cleaned out.

Title of Proposed Lesson: Computer History
Objective: Digital citizenship A. Technology and Society  1. Explain how technology affects the individual and society
Teleresearch Purpose: #1: practice searching and #2: find out more about a topic and #6: publish
Grade Level: 5
Content Area: Technology, Social Studies
Summary: The 5th graders will build collaborative web-sites (small groups) on the different eras of technology.
Value: (i.e. why it's "worth it": There are very few kid-friendly websites out there about computer history that are accurate and easy to navigate. Creating more resources is always a plus.

Title of Proposed Lesson: The 3 C’s of the Internet (Cybersafety, Cybersecurity, Cyberethics.)
Objective: Digital citizenship B. Legal and Ethical Issues 1. Practice responsible and appropriate use of technology
systems, software, and information
Teleresearch Purpose: Mostly #2 find out more about a topic, but also #5- to help students solve an authentic problem (assess knowledge level of school community and bring it up to par) and #6-publish
Grade Level: 8
Content Area: Technology. Religion/Ethics
Summary: The 8th grade will discover how to best protect their computers and themselves and share that information with the community.
Value: Skills are important once they are out on their own. Students practicing common sense? Invaluable.

Beth,
I think you indicated that you were interested in developing the "clean out the computer lab" activity.
What would the student learning objective be (i.e. at the end of the activity students would be able to :
--conduct basic searches for information using Google
--synthesize the results of that information in an informational brochure.

compile the results of the searching into

Objectives have to be "assessable." What would you be assessing? Whether students can use google to locate information about an assigned topic?

although not required for this activity, it helps to think about how you might assess the activity.
If you were assessing students skills, how would you determine if they have the basic search skills they need? Perhaps you would develop a rubric to assess the brochure? Perhaps you would have them fill out a preliminary search report --with columns listing the information they found and a summary of what they learned.

Oops. I wrote the "objective" for me not the students -

I am currently following the Maryland State Voluntary standards for Technology literacy.

My telepurpose would be: Solve an authentic problem.

The standard that I'm working with is:
Standard 6.0 – Technology for Problem-Solving and Decision-Making:
A. Investigate Problems and Propose Solutions
1. Understand the Problem
2. Devise a Plan
3. Carry Out the Plan

My students will first be introduced to the issue through videos and podcasts.
They will be able to view the props from the lab (monitors, computers, ink)
Once the class has clarified the issue -
1. They will individually develop search protocols to conduct their original Google search.
2. The students will work in groups to decide what is the best method for disposal of the technology and organize that information into a webpage.
Students will then have the option of earning service hours by implementing the methods on the technology in the lab or creating a community event for recycling.

So the overall objective is to see if the students can use technology for problem solving. The basic objectives are searching for, synthesizing and publishing information.
